ESL 0204 Intermediate Skills

This course focuses on study skills to strengthen command and confidence in using English in academic environments. 1½ hours. Ms. Carroll.

ESL 0302 Advanced Speaking

Through small group work, personal audiotape recording, class conversation and actual public speeches, students will practice to develop the techniques and skills needed for effective oral communication. Students learn strategies for speaking in general and academic settings to help them with appropriate English expression. Students learn to interpret situations based on setting and participants and to modify their speech in reaction to other speakers’ responses. Skills learned include speaking to and in a group, making a group decision, and public speaking. 3 hours. Not offered 2008-09.

ESL 0303 Advanced Reading and Grammar

This course trains students to become critical readers at the college and professional levels. Attention is given to vocabulary acquisition, timed readings to improve efficiency, and identification of main idea, syntax, relationships, inferences, tone and argument to improve compre­hen­sion. Lessons on context-embedded grammar help students to tie rules of grammar to written context. 3 hours. Ms. Williams.

ESL 0304 Advanced Writing

This course develops effective writing skills and prepares students for success in academic writing. Students study the mechanics and rhetorical modes used in effective academic essays. They are required to demonstrate their understanding through writing projects which show competent organization, development and conclusion. Forms of discourse to be studied are: narra­tion, description, exemplification, ana­ly­sis, process, cause and effect, com­parison and contrast, classification, definition, argu­ment and persuasion. Use of quotations and docu­mentation of sources will also be covered. 3 hours. Ms. Bitterman.
