On Saturday August 23rd UTS-New York City co- sponsored the inaugural “For Our Sons Conference”, in conjunction with the Real Dads Network. The purpose of the conference, held at 4 West 43rd Street in New York, was to continue to educate the public on the urgency of the situation confronting young inner city males in urban America.
The conference, which attracted in upwards of 125 participants, focused on how the absence of fathers from the home contributes to a cycle dysfunction and what could done to reverse this process. The conference featured the work of the urban filmmaker Eric Mckay, who presented his documentary entitled “For Our Sons”. This powerfully gripping documentary, which has gained national recognition, chronicles the struggles of a varied group of inner city men who have had relationships with their fathers which run the entire spectrum. These men, who came from all walks of life and religious persuasions, addressed how they overcame their personal challenges; to evolve into successful manhood. The conference also featured some poignant discussion from people in the audience, including young inner city males; who came out in large numbers to view the film. A solid foundation was laid to continue future discussions on how UTS- New York City could play a meaningful role in developing a “Real Dads” initiative. UTS- New York City’s Urban Church Community Development Assistance Project (UCCDAP) plans to present a module on this subject at its upcoming mini-conference in November, as well as the major conference in April.
