On February 9, 2010, the New York State Education Department in Albany, NY, authorized Unification Theological Seminary to grant the Master of Arts degree in Religious Studies. This culminates an 18-month process guided by the Academic Dean, Dr. Kathy Winings, with the able assistance of Dr. Michael Mickler and Dr. Andrew Wilson. The application was abetted by consultant Dr. Jack Seymour, Professor of Religious Education at Garrett Evangelical Seminary, who visited the campus in January, 2009. The school submitted Dr. Seymour's positive assessment with the proposal to the SED the next month.

"We're thrilled to gain this approval for the MA in Religious Studies. It gives our students greater program choice and access to interfaith awareness and practical skills, in particular skills in non-profit leadership. The degree is a great step forward on career paths in many fields, as employers look for people with social awareness and respect for diversity."
- Dr. Kathy Winings, UTS Academic Dean
The MAR is a two-year program that supplements UTS's two other master degree programs, the M.Div and MRE, as well as its Doctorate in Ministry degree program. It is a comprehensive program that provides graduates a well-rounded education in religion with an academic focus and shorter amount of time than the M.Div. It can serve as the core of a chaplaincy track for men and women of diverse faith traditions. It was a dream of Dr. Lonnie McLeod that UTS would provide access to professional chaplaincy and pastoral counseling certification to members of the Muslim community in the greater New York area.
UTS will launch the Master of Arts in Religion program in the Fall term of 2010, and is taking applications now. To Apply please contact Mrs. Davetta Ogunlola in Admissions.
