At the end of next week we will have a very special event at the Unification Theological Seminary in Barrytown, NY. September 20th is the 40th anniversary of the Opening Convocation of the seminary, including the installation of the first President and Dean of UTS.
UTS is a testament to the vision and practical faith of our Founders, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon and his wife, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon. At the Seminary’s Inaugural Convocation, September 20, 1975, Father Moon stated,
“Rediscovery of God, establishment of a parental relationship between God and humankind and the resurrection of divine love … are the human conditions required for ultimate peace and happiness. We can turn nowhere but to religion for the great revolution of human consciousness …The Seminary is not a place or a building; it is people who are equipped with the spirit and ideal of God … We must change our direction from theologies that are deprived of life and spirit and turn to a new theology with a dynamic lifestyle in which God would directly participate."The Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon
For our Founders, UTS is a place for students to rediscover God, to establish an intimate parent-child relationship with God, and to resurrect divine love. Father and Mother Moon have achieved this in their own lives. In 1975, Father Moon proposed it as a goal for the incoming class and for all future classes. He set a high bar, but expected no less.
He looked for UTS to graduate creative leaders with depth of heart and love who would produce "brilliant deeds and results", and who would be "master builders of the ideal world" of true love.
I was fortunate to be one of the incoming students present on that day in September 1975, and I treasure the memory of that great assembly. I invite you to come to Barrytown to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the founding of UTS on Sunday September 20th.
There will be a commemorative service in the chapel, beginning at 11:00 AM with some of the leaders of HSA-UWC and of UTS giving messages.
There will be a presentation of a short film of that inaugural event; there will be food; there will be music with Seiko Lee; and there will be a chance to hear first-hand memories and reflections from some members of that first “Class of 1977”.
