BARRYTOWN - On Sunday, September 20th the Unification Theological Seminary (UTS) will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the founding of UTS. Trustees, administration, current and former professors, staff and guests will all gather in the UTS chapel for a commemorative service recalling that day on September 20th, 1975 and the forty fruitful years which followed.
Dr. Ki Hoon Kim (UTS’96), Continental Chairman of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) in North America and Dr. Michael Balcomb (UTS’94;D.Min’09) President of FFWPU, USA and Chairman, UTS Board of Trustees, will be the featured speakers.
Dr. Hugh Spurgin (UTS‘77), current UTS President, and one of the 53 incoming students of the first class in 1975 will share about the historical significance of UTS. A musical offering by soprano Seiko Lee will also be presented.
The service will begin promptly at 11 a.m., followed by a pot-luck lunch at approximately 12:15 p.m. on the lawn. Participants are encouraged to bring a dish to share. In keeping with the spirit of the celebration, UTS will be catering bulgogi for everyone.
Following lunch a 30-minute film of the first convocation and the Inaugural Address given by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon on Saturday, September 20, 1975 will be shown in Lecture Hall 2, for those who wish to attend.
The film shows the UTS co-founders, the new incoming students, and local officials from Red Hook and the surrounding area. Also featured is the installation of President David S.C. Kim and Dean Therese Stewart and the introduction of the faculty.
The film highlights Rev. Moon’s vision and hope the seminary was destined to fulfill and how that vision would manifest itself when he closed his remarks with these words:
“In this sense I strongly believe that the Inaugural Convocation of the Unification Theological Seminary today is the laying of the cornerstone
of the earthly Kingdom of God.”
- The Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon
